The Secret to ACCESS and IMPROVE your PATIENCE

Visiting my father in Las Vegas has brought up the importance of a vital idea for me: patience.

What is patience?

Patience is the ability to create an interval between our thoughts/feelings and our actions.

Without the ability to create this interval, we react – set off like a jack-in-the-box cranked one too many times when are triggers are set. Or, just as likely, we may quit instead of persevering towards our desired outcome.

Let’s cut to the chase: how do we build patience? Here’s a 2 step solution.

1: awareness is always the key. (a) awareness that you need to build patience (b) awareness of you’re desire to.

2: create a symbol for yourself – something that you can remember in any situation and one that will remind you to create that needed interval — especially in times of stress.

We could add steps, go into theory, and make this more complicated – but let’s just leave it at this: ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS TO REMEMBER THAT YOUR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS  REQUIRE NO BEHAVIOR. We could get into meditations and techniques for diffusing and disarming your triggers… but you already know the quick fix—which, if you can master, is a substitute for accessing patience.

If you can create space – ANY SPACE – between your thoughts/feelings and your behavior… then you have acted patiently. Remember and uphold this space and you can endure anything… the moment you forget it is the moment you’ll crumble.

If you’ve ever watched someone with road rage – you’ll notice one thing: their reaction is immediate. They’ve allowed absolutely no interval between their affect (feeling), cognitions (thoughts), and behavior (actions)…. And because of this – if they still cannot manage to create that interval – serious problems can develop….

So, (1) RECOGNIZE THE INTERVAL BETWEEN YOUR THOUGHTS/FEELINGS AND ACTIONS… (2) keep that interval wide especially before entering a potentially “triggering” (or patience-trying) circumstance.

FINALLY: if you can, anchor this “remembrance” into your body…. Tie a string around your finger… draw a sharpie mark on the back of your hand… ANYTHING to get you to remember to keep the interval open….

Just be careful – the opposite problem afflicts many people as well: their interval is so wide open they become inert! But, one thing at a time!

Let me know how it goes or if you want more information!

Much Love and Many Blessings!
